The model is the easy part.
The people are the hard part.
We build the hard part.

A three-year program for exceptional AI engineers from the top twenty percent of Dutch (applied) universities. Selectively assembled. Senior-led. Trained by us. Working for you.

AI Fronteers at work in the Utrecht studio, four people around a data display.
<|three principles|>

Build. Protect. Navigate.

Three commitments that run through every Fronteer’s trajectory, and that the program does not pretend to separate.

<|build|>

Build what scales, not what demos.

From first working prototype to stable production. Maintainable, affordable, observable. The version that runs on Monday morning, not the one that wins the pitch on Friday.

<|protect|>

Hold the harder question.

Not "can we build this?" but "should we, and with what guard rails?" Security, privacy and the AI Act are part of the design, never a closing chapter.

<|navigate|>

Carry the change through.

Find the right use case. Make the business case stand up. Earn the trust of the people it touches. See it through to the operation that uses it every day.

<|the program|>

A three-year program.
Selectively assembled.
Senior-led.

AI Fronteers is a three-year applied program for AI engineers from the top twenty percent of Dutch (applied) universities. Selection is rigorous. Mentorship comes from the senior network of 227 Data & AI.

Fronteers start working from day one and keep learning throughout, trained by us, working for you. They are placed inside real organisations with real problems, guided by senior architects, and shaped by a shared body of principles.

Our goal is to build a force for responsible AI: builders, navigators and guardians of a bright future with AI.

Based in Utrecht. By application only.

227 Data & AI

AI Fronteers is powered by 227 Data & AI, a senior practice based in Utrecht that has spent more than a decade helping Dutch organizations apply data and AI to problems that actually matter.

We saw a pattern repeat itself: serious organizations could build models, but stalled on scaling them, on governing them, on building enough internal weight to carry the change. And we saw that the most talented graduates were being lost to standard traineeships that asked too little of them.

AI Fronteers exists at the intersection of both: a program that asks more of the people it forms, and a partnership that gives organizations a person they can rely on for the long stretch of work that follows.

Are you ready to take responsibility as an organisation? Do you have AI questions serious enough to be carried by an AI Fronteer? Then we should talk.

Are you in the top 20% of your AI studies at a Dutch (applied) university? Do you have both feet on the ground, and do you want a career, not just a job? Write to us. One paragraph is enough.

<|questions|>

Frequently asked.

Who is AI Fronteers for?
Recent graduates and near-graduates from the top twenty percent of Dutch (applied) universities, in disciplines connected to AI: engineering, mathematics, computer science, data science, applied physics, sometimes adjacent fields. We expect demonstrable technical depth, a portfolio that shows judgement, and an interest in carrying responsibility, not just shipping models.
Is this a salaried position?
Yes. Fronteers receive a market-conformant compensation throughout the three years. The program is not an unpaid traineeship, a study leave, or a stipend. It is a working trajectory, with mentorship and shared standards layered on top.
How does selection work?
A short written application, one paragraph is enough, followed by a portfolio review, a structured conversation with a senior mentor from 227 Data & AI, and a small technical exercise designed to test judgement rather than speed. We hold the bar high, but we keep the process humane and finite.
What happens after three years?
Most Fronteers continue in the organization where they have been placed, often in a senior role they helped define. Some return to 227 Data & AI as architects or mentors of the next group. None of this is contractually predetermined. The trajectory is designed so that the person, the organization and the program all benefit from a free choice at the end of it.
Where is the program based?
Utrecht. Group meetings, mentorship sessions and shared work happen at 227 Data & AI's office; placements happen at the host organizations across the Netherlands.
